The Sketch of Maromas is a description and history of the Maromas section of Middletown. It was compiled under the direction of Old Records Project #2507 Works Progress Administration in 1937.
"Along the pleasant reaches of the Connecticut River in the southeastern section of Middletown, lies the sparsely settled district of Maromas or Regowest as it was often termed in the early deeds.
While the origin of either name is not definitely known, it is suggested that the word “Maromas” is a corruption of some form of the old English Word “marmoric” pertaining to marble, and that the underlying granite and “White Rocks” would suggest this name. The word “Regowset” is Indian and was undoubtedly the original name for this locality."
"This sketch of the original Maromas District has been made possible through the hearty co-operation of those who were interested and the helpful information which has been so freely given.
It is hoped it will be but a beginning and form a background from which wider interest will be shown and more information obtained in regard to the early settlers of this typical New England community, which the limits of time and space have not permitted in this brief account."
